Newsweek Misreads the Bible

On the front page of Newsweek for this week, Lisa Miller writes that the Bible does not, in fact, stand for marriage just between a man and a woman.  Her whole article is skewed so that even Jesus Himself is not a proponent of marriage. (She apparently has not read Matthew 19:4-5.)  She mistakenly quotes scripture and says that Jesus was single and encouraged “indifference to earthly attachments, especially family.”  She argues that “Scripture gives us no good reason why gays and lesbians should not be (civilly and religiously) married – and a number of excellent reasons why they should.”  In an overwhelming demonstration of her drastic misunderstanding about the Bible, she asks, “Why should we regard (the Bible’s) condemnation of homosexuality with more seriousness than we regard its advice, which is far lengthier, on the best price to pay for a slave?”  She even suggests that Biblical figures David and Jonathan were homosexual!  Ms. Miller’s article demonstrates the media’s incredible bias and the lengths to which some will go to justify homosexual marriage.  It is important that we all speak up for truth in response. We encourage you to be active in the internet world by blogging, leaving comments on these stories, and posting links to these things with your own summaries of why you respectfully disagree!

Here’s what other national leaders are saying:

Dr. Al Mohler wrote this on his blog (CLICK HERE to read his entire entry):

“Miller’s broadside attack on the biblical teachings on marriage goes to the heart of what will appear as her argument for same-sex marriage.  She argues that, in the Old Testament, “examples of what social conservatives call ‘the traditional family’ are scarcely to be found.”  This is true, of course, if what you mean by ‘traditional family’ is the picture of America in the 1950s.  The Old Testament notion of the family starts with the idea that the family is the carrier of covenant promises, and this family is defined, from the onset, as a transgenerational extended family of kin and kindred.”

He also rebuffs her suggestion that Paul did not intend to condemn homosexuality as we know it:

“Miller dismisses the Levitical condemnations of homosexuality as useless because ‘our modern understanding of the world has surpassed its prescriptions.’  But she saves her most creative dismissal for the Apostle Paul.  Paul, she concedes, ‘was tough on homosexuality.’  Nevertheless, she takes encouragement from the fact that ‘progressive scholars’ have found a way to re-interpret the Pauline passages to refer only to homosexual violence and promiscuity.

In this light she cites author Neil Elliott and his book, The Arrogance of Nations.  Elliott, like other ‘progressive scholars,’ suggests that the modern notion of sexual orientation is simply missing from the biblical worldview, and thus the biblical authors are not really talking about what we know as homosexuality at all.  ‘Paul is not talking about what we call homosexuality at all,’ as Miller quotes Elliott.

Of course, no honest reader of the biblical text will share this simplistic and backward conclusion.  Furthermore, to accept this argument is to assume that the Christian church has misunderstood the Bible from its very birth — and that we are now dependent upon contemporary ‘progressive scholars’ to tell us what Christians throughout the centuries have missed.”

Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention and and others were interviewed by Politico in regard to the Newsweek article (CLICK HERE for Politico’s article).  Land said,

“Quoting chapter and verse, Land argued that the Bible lays out a very clear prescription for opposite-sex marriage, starting with the passage in Genesis where God pairs Adam and Eve and proceeding through Ephesians, in the New Testament, when the apostle Paul compares the relationship between husband and wife to the relationship between Jesus and the Church.

“‘How can you address the subject of marriage from a religious perspective and utterly ignore the two foundational texts that deal with marriage: Genesis 2 and Ephesians 5?’ Land asked. ‘If a student turned a paper in to me on a religious argument for or against gay marriage and neglected to reference the two foundational texts, I would give them a pretty poor grade based on that alone.'”

I think that it is utterly unacceptable that a so-called reporter can write and article full of complete misrepresentations and still have a job. It is similarly inconceivable that editors and publishers of one of the world’s largest magazines would run such an erroneous article. If this were the National Inquirer that would be one thing, but it’s not. Having an opinion that gay marriage should be accepted by the church is your right, but to tell outright lies about what the Bible says about the issue is a shame.

I left a comment on Newsweek’s site about the article. I find it alarming how utterly incorrect she is. Obviously, what she states is blatantly inaccurate. Her claims that are supposedly based on scripture are so far off the wall and inaccurate because she probably expects most of the people who will read it are non-Bible readers. But if she wants to be taken seriously, she really should make scriptural references rather than conjure up what she WANTS an appropriate reference to say. Marriage in the Bible has ALWAYS been between a man and a woman. Though polygamy was common in the old testament, Christ made it clear in the New Testament that marriage was between one man and one woman and to do otherwise was adultery:

Mark 10:12 – “…if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.”
Luke 16:18 – “Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.”
Galations 5:19-21 – “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

And as far as homosexuality or sodomy in the Bible is concerned, Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by fire and brimstone because of, frankly the sodomy aka: homosexuality and any individual to be found living in sodomy was to be put to death:

Genesis 5:3-8: “But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, and said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing °; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.”
(“to know” in the original Hebrew, “dyyada” means to “lie with a man.”)
Leviticus 18:22 – “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”
Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”
Jude 1:7 – “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like ° manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

Next time she wants to present an argument, she should actually quote from a reference she’s actually read and not use the “sparknotes” version.

Proverbs 26 has lots to say about a fool, but what we are hearing most from Christians
is v4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.

Christians do this every time the Devil accuses God through atheists. Don’t go to this movie, don’t read this book, President Bush should not go to the Olympics in Beijiing ,etc. We say, take a doubter to that movie and TALK about what you saw and heard. Go to a bookclub reading that book. Go to the Olympics and take the microphone and pray for China IN JESUS’ NAME. The issue is to ALLOW the HOLY SPIRIT to control your thoughts and tongue. God keeps us here to be His witness, not His naysayers. If the person doesn’t want to hear, leave, and don’t “befriend” them in an attempt to get another scalp for the kingdom. God has to call a person, not us. We water if allowed and nourish if invited.

We Christians no longer have solid ground to stand on. Episcopalian sodomist Bishop, pediphile Catholic priests, Methodists & Presbyterian ministers performing sodomist marriages. But that is not my point. My point is because we do NOT HAVE the POWER of God, the indwelling HOLY SPIRIT, we are helpless to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. The HOLY SPIRIT can only be prayed for after a person accepts the word of God and has been baptized. This anointing comes only from one who POSSESSES the Holy Spirit. It’s not for sale Simon the Sorcerer, nor can this power be a pretense.

Our Christianity today in the USA is men building their kingdoms here on earth, without repentance, without Godly sorrow, without submission to God. We need daily forgiveness, but we read about leaders who say ridiculous things, are called on it, and REFUSE to be sorry for hurting the flock. Is it any wonder our churches look just like the world. We allow every kind of disgrace and evil within its walls and call it tolerance. There are very, very few disciples, fewer apostles, and still less prophets. It is impossible to prepare God’s people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up in unity, maturity, knowledge of Christ with only three of the five necessary “trainers”.

If Christians only were able to love one another, as Jesus said, the whole world would know we were His disciples. As it is, the world sees a sick, selfpitying, proud “club” that is trying to evangelize a world that does not want what it has to offer. Oh, they’ll take our food and shelter, but what rascal wouldn’t? Now, in countries where there is persecution, God is able to be glorified through his servants because they submit to His authority. We should feel great pain for sodomists because they seek the love of God, but don’t see it’s fruit in Christians. The world tells boys and girls that they NEED marriage and children to be happy. It is unseemly and pathetic to be single, so find someone to share your grief, even if it is probably wrong because having another human being care for you even in a sick way is better than nothing. God help us all.

I cannot add anything to Carol,s comments; they so mirror my own understanding of who and what we are to be in this “fallen world”. Thank you, Carol.

Great post! I really enjoy reading your blog. Keep up the good work.

I’ve just started a new blog that will be highlighting the dangerous advances of the secular progressive movement (pro-gay “rights”, pro-abortion, anti-religious freedoms, etc). Unfortunately, most Christians still don’t know what’s going on out there and the mainstream media certainly isn’t covering it.

We’re looking to build a solid group of social conservatives who’ll frequent our site regularly and contribute to some good discussions. I hope you’ll check us out!

If you’ll add us to your blogroll we’ll gladly add you to ours. Just drop us a comment over at our blog so that we’ll know to add you. Our blog is called Religion and Morality.

Oh, come on, how many types of homosexuality are there???! To say that the “type” of homosexuality that Paul speaks against in the Bible is different from the “type” that we have now is, if it wasn’t such a blatant and sad evidence of the very blindness of soul that the Bible speaks of, almost laughable in its ridiculousness and close-mindedness! And the proponents of homosexuality and opponents of Christianity say that WE go to any lengths to prove our claims concerning our beliefs are true??? Give me a break!!!
